Learn Terraform by building real Azure infrastructure

A project-based course that takes you from your very first terraform apply to a full CI/CD pipeline — building one real Azure web app, entirely as code. No prior Terraform experience needed.

Who it's for

Built for engineers who ship

If you're comfortable in a terminal and tired of clicking through cloud portals, this is your on-ramp to Infrastructure as Code.

Software engineers

Move your infrastructure into code and pull requests, right next to the app you already ship.

Infra & SysAdmins

Trade click-ops for repeatable, reviewable, version-controlled infrastructure you can trust.

DevOps & platform

Standardize how your team provisions and delivers cloud, with modules and CI/CD baked in.

What you'll build

One project, carried across all ten sessions

You join a platform team. Terraform provisions your Git repository on day one — then you build, secure, import, modularize and continuously deliver a real Azure web application from that same repo. Nothing is throwaway.

01–04

Foundations

Workflow, state, variables & iteration on the GitHub provider — zero cloud cost.

05–06

Go to Azure

Remote state backend, authentication, and your first real Azure infrastructure.

07–08

Real-world

Data sources, lifecycle, importing existing resources and catching drift.

09–10

Scale & ship

Refactor into modules, then deliver through a scanned pull-request pipeline.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do

You leave with the skills — and a complete, modular, CI/CD-delivered Azure environment in your own repository.

Author, plan and apply Terraform with confidence — and read state like a map.
Keep configs DRY with variables, locals, outputs, conditionals and iteration.
Store state safely in an Azure backend and authenticate the right way.
Build Azure networking, App Services and PostgreSQL from the provider docs.
Import brownfield resources and detect configuration drift.
Package infrastructure into reusable modules.
Scan and ship changes via a GitHub Actions pull-request & CI/CD workflow.
Work the real loop: read the plan, commit, open the PR, ship it.
Curriculum

Ten sessions, one continuous build

Each 2-hour session pairs focused theory and live demos with a hands-on lab on your own project.

01

Introduction to IaC & Terraform

What IaC is, HCL, providers, and the core workflow.

02

Main Concepts

CLI, providers, resources, dependencies and state.

03

Variables & Outputs

Inputs, precedence, validation, locals and outputs.

04

Conditionals & Iterations

count, for_each and for expressions — stay DRY.

05

State Backends & Azure Auth

Remote state, the azurerm backend, and authentication.

06

Building Azure Infrastructure

azurerm patterns, reading docs, naming, tags, networking.

07

Advanced Resources

Data sources, depends_on, dynamic blocks, lifecycle.

08

Importing & Managing State

Brownfield import, state surgery and drift.

09

Terraform Modules

Structure, registry, private sharing and versioning.

10

Terraform in CI/CD

Checkov, the PR workflow, disposable envs and drift.

How each session runs

A rhythm that keeps you building

No four-hour lectures. Every session is short bursts of theory, live demos, then you at the keyboard.

50 min

Theory + live demos

The concepts, shown in real code you can follow along with.

10 min

Break

Reset, then back to it.

20–30 min

More theory + demos

The second concept block, building on the first.

30–40 min

Hands-on lab

You extend your own project — the through-line of the whole course.

Why this course

Different from the usual tutorial

One real project

Not disconnected snippets — a single Azure app you build, refactor and ship end to end.

Azure-focused, portable skills

Deep on the azurerm provider, with GitHub used early so you learn cost-free.

Production habits from day one

Plan files, state, pull requests and security scanning — how teams really work.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need prior Terraform experience?

No. The course starts from your first commands and builds up. You should be comfortable using a terminal and have a basic grasp of cloud concepts.

Do I need an Azure subscription?

The first sessions use the GitHub provider at zero cost. For the Azure sessions you'll use a subscription — we cover setup, and a shared training subscription can be arranged for private cohorts.

What tools do I need installed?

Terraform, the GitHub CLI, the Azure CLI and a code editor. There's a short setup guide you complete before session one — about 15 minutes.

Will I get the materials?

Yes — all decks, step-by-step labs and demo code are yours to keep, and you finish with a complete project in your own repository.

Can you run this for my team privately?

Absolutely. Private and team cohorts can be scheduled and tailored. Get in touch for a quote.
